When The Light Settles

Settling In Along the California Coast

There’s a strange period after a big move where life feels suspended between two versions of yourself. You know where you came from.  You know why you left.  But you haven’t fully settled into your new home. Everything feels slightly unfamiliar at first:  The grocery stores. The streets. The routines. The silence.

But slowly, almost without noticing, something begins to soften. The roads stop feeling confusing.  The routines begin to form naturally.  The unfamiliar starts to become recognizable.  And eventually, a place that once felt temporary begins to feel like home.

The Marine Layer Evenings

Over the past few weeks, we’ve started taking long evening walks through the hills overlooking the California coastline. Some of our favorite walks are when the marine layer rolls in just before sunset. One moment the sky is glowing gold. The next, fog begins drifting over the hillsides, slowly swallowing the last light of the evening. Street lamps begin to glow. Windows light up in the distance. Everything becomes quieter.

And somewhere during those evening walks, we realized that we’re starting to settle into our new home. Not through some big milestone.  Not through certainty.  Just through repetition. Presence. And with that, familiarity slowly builds over time.

What Moving Actually Feels Like

We’ve realized that moving is much bigger than the actual act of moving in itself.  It’s something that keeps unfolding long after you arrive and all the boxes are unpacked.

At first, everything is unfamiliar in a quiet, constant way. Even simple things take extra energy.  Learning new routines, missing old ones, trying to feel grounded enough to catch your breath. You don’t fully belong to the new place yet, but you’re no longer fully anchored to the old one either.  So you exist in the in-between.

And then, without a clear moment of arrival, something begins to shift. Familiarity builds quietly. You begin to realize you’re not just visiting anymore.  And slowly begin to integrate.

The Creative Mind Comes Online

As that integration process begins to naturally unfold, something subtle starts to return. Curiosity. Creative thoughts. Ideas for projects that had been quiet for a while. The mental energy that was once tied up in transition, uncertainty, and constant adjustment slowly begins freeing itself again. And in its place, creativity starts finding room to breathe. Suddenly, the urge to create doesn’t feel forced anymore. It feels natural. Like a part of ourselves slowly coming back online after being buried beneath months of stress and change.

This particular shot in our neighborhood, was actually one of the first photos we took with our new camera and lens.  It may be our favorite photo that we’ve ever taken.  We hope you can feel the emotion behind it too.

Final Thoughts

When The Light Settles” is rooted in the process of settling into somewhere new.  One messy step at a time.
