Beneath Neon Lights
2AM in Tokyo
We woke up at 2am still feeling jetlagged. Still on mountain time. Unable to sleep any longer, we decided to get out of bed and explore Tokyo in the early hours of the morning. So, we grabbed our jackets and camera gear and stepped out into the dark.
Little did we know, it would turn into a moment we’d never forget.
A Different Side of Tokyo
The streets were quiet in a way that felt unfamiliar for a city of nearly 14 million people. The crowds were gone. The trains had stopped running.
Storefronts glowed softly against empty sidewalks, and the city felt slower. More intimate. It was the kind of Tokyo we hadn't seen during the day. Without the rush of commuters and tourists, we had the city streets all to ourselves.
When the Rain Arrived
Shortly after making our way out the door, the first raindrops began to fall. Within minutes, the rain had taken over. Neon signs reflected across wet pavement. Traffic lights shimmered in puddles. Every surface seemed to glow beneath the storm.
A Phone Booth in the Rain
At one point, we found ourselves standing beneath an overhang watching the rain fall over a nearby phone booth. We hadn't expected to see one. Somehow, in a city that often feels decades ahead of the rest of the world, the phone booth felt like a small reminder of another time.
So, we captured the moment with the rain pouring down and all. A few minutes later, we found ourselves inside a nearby 7-Eleven buying a pair of those clear umbrellas you see all over Tokyo when it rains. There is something oddly beautiful about them. How they make you feel part of the city rather than hiding from it.
The Walk Home
We wandered for hours jumping through puddles on the wet streets. It didn’t matter that we were jetlagged, cold and tired.
We felt alive.
Soaked and shivering, we headed back to our tiny studio apartment. By then, it was early morning and the sun was starting to rise. Our hearts were full. Spirits somewhere between exhaustion and awe. Travel still in our bones.
That day, we found magic in the rain, and fell a little more in love with Japan.
Finding Magic in the Ordinary
Travel often encourages us to chase the highlights. The famous viewpoints. The bucket-list destinations. The places everyone says you have to see. Yet years later, it's often the smaller moments that stay with us. A conversation with a stranger. A sunrise before the crowds arrive.
Or in this case, a rainy walk through Tokyo at 2am. An empty street. A glowing phone booth. A city showing us a quieter side of itself.
This video is our attempt to preserve that feeling. Thirty minutes inspired by a single moment in the rain. A reminder that some of the most memorable parts of travel happen when you're simply willing to let a place reveal itself.
